A general guide only. Genetics, weight, and health all affect how a dog ages.
Formula used
The calculator uses the AKC size-based method rather than the old “multiply by 7” rule:
- Year 1 ≈ 15 human years
- Year 2 ≈ +9 human years (so a 2-year-old dog ≈ 24)
- Each year after that adds, by size: small ~4, medium ~5, large ~6, giant ~7 human years
Worked examples
3-year-old medium dog
A 3-year-old medium dog is about 29 human years old: 24 for the first two years plus 5 for the third.
10-year-old large dog
A 10-year-old large-breed dog is about 72 human years old and is considered a senior — large dogs reach their senior years earlier than small breeds.
How to use this calculator
- Enter your dog's age in years (use a decimal such as 0.5 for a 6-month-old puppy).
- Choose your dog's adult size category — this strongly affects aging.
- Press Calculate to see the human-age equivalent and life stage.
- Use the result as a prompt to adjust diet, exercise, and vet check-up frequency.

Frequently asked questions
Is one dog year really seven human years?
No. The “1 dog year = 7 human years” rule is a myth. Dogs mature very quickly in their first two years and then age at a rate that depends on their size. This calculator uses the more accurate size-based method.
Why do bigger dogs age faster?
Large and giant breeds grow faster, reach old age sooner, and generally have shorter lifespans than small breeds. That's why a 10-year-old Great Dane is “older,” in human terms, than a 10-year-old Chihuahua.
How old is a 1-year-old dog in human years?
Roughly 15 human years, regardless of size. A one-year-old dog is past puppyhood and similar to a human teenager in development, even though it may still act playful.
When is a dog considered a senior?
It depends on size. Small dogs often become seniors around 10–11 years, medium dogs around 10, large dogs around 8, and giant breeds as early as 6–7 years. The calculator flags the senior stage based on size.
How do I work out my puppy's age in human years?
Enter the age as a decimal — for example, 0.5 for six months. Puppies develop fast: a 6-month-old puppy is roughly equivalent to a young human child, and a one-year-old is close to a teenager.
Does this work for mixed-breed dogs?
Yes. Just choose the size category that matches your dog's adult weight. For mixes, estimate the size your dog is (or will be) full-grown and use that group.
