Your result will appear here after you press Calculate.
Yarn estimates assume single crochet (sc) with a 10% buffer. Bulky and chunky yarns finish much faster and use fewer yards.
Formula used
The calculator converts gauge to stitches and rows per inch, then scales to your finished size:
- Stitches per inch = gauge stitches ÷ 4
- Starting chain = round(width × stitches per inch) + 1 turning chain
- Total rows = round(length × rows per inch)
- Estimated yarn = width × length × yards-per-square-inch (by yarn weight) × 1.10
Worked examples
Standard 50 × 60 in throw, worsted weight
At 13 sc and 13 rows per 4 inches, a 50 × 60 inch throw starts with about 164 stitches and works up over 195 rows. The estimated yarn is roughly 2,640 yards — about 8 skeins of 364-yard worsted.
Cozy 50 × 60 in throw, super bulky weight
Switching to super bulky at 7 sc and 8 rows per 4 inches, the same throw needs only about 88 stitches and 120 rows, using roughly 1,320 yards — a much faster make.
How to use this calculator
- Choose a throw size preset, or pick Custom and enter your finished width and length.
- Make a gauge swatch and enter stitches and rows per 4 inches (10 cm).
- Select your yarn weight and the yards per skein from the ball band.
- Press Calculate to see the starting chain, total rows, and yarn estimate.
- Round the starting chain to fit your stitch-pattern repeat if needed.

Frequently asked questions
What is the standard size for a crochet throw blanket?
A standard crochet throw is about 50 × 60 inches (127 × 152 cm). Smaller lapghans run around 36 × 48 inches, while a large throw can reach 55 × 70 inches. Pick a size based on whether it's for a single person on the couch or for sharing.
How much yarn do I need for a throw blanket?
A 50 × 60 inch single-crochet throw in worsted-weight yarn uses roughly 2,400–2,800 yards, or about 8 average skeins. Bulky and super-bulky yarns use far fewer yards because each stitch covers more area. Enter your yarn weight to get a tailored estimate.
How many chains do I start with for a throw?
Multiply the finished width by your stitches-per-inch gauge and add one turning chain. For a 50-inch throw at about 3.25 stitches per inch, that's roughly 164 chains — but always base the number on your own swatch.
Can I make a throw bigger without changing the pattern?
Yes. Add stitches to the starting chain in multiples of your stitch repeat to widen it, and add rows to lengthen it. Recalculate the yarn estimate, because more area always means more yarn.
Why does bulky yarn need fewer yards?
Bulky and super-bulky yarns are thicker, so each stitch and each yard covers more surface area. You reach the same finished size with fewer total yards — though the blanket weighs more and feels chunkier.
Does the estimate include a border?
No. The yarn figure covers the main body with a 10% buffer. A wide or textured border, tassels, or color changes will use extra yarn, so buy one additional skein in the same dye lot.
