Estimates assume plain stockinette/garter with a 10% buffer. Borders and textured stitches add yardage.
Formula used
Cast-on and rows come from gauge; yarn scales with area:
- Cast-on stitches = round(width × stitches per inch)
- Total rows = round(length × rows per inch)
- Estimated yarn = width × length × yards-per-square-inch (by yarn weight) × 1.10
- Skeins = ceil(estimated yarn ÷ yards per skein)
Worked examples
Baby blanket 40 × 50 in, worsted
At 18 stitches and 24 rows per 4 inches, a 40 × 50 inch blanket casts on about 180 stitches, runs 300 rows, and uses roughly 1,100 yards — about 5 skeins of 220-yard yarn.
Throw 50 × 60 in, bulky
In bulky yarn at 12 stitches and 16 rows per 4 inches, a 50 × 60 inch throw casts on about 150 stitches and uses roughly 1,155 yards — quicker than worsted for the same size.

Frequently asked questions
How much yarn do I need to knit a blanket?
It depends on size, gauge, and yarn weight. A worsted baby blanket (about 30 × 40 inches) uses roughly 700–900 yards, a throw 1,500–2,000 yards, and a queen blanket can exceed 6,000 yards. Enter your numbers for a specific estimate.
How many skeins of yarn for a blanket?
Divide the estimated yardage by the yards per skein on the ball band and round up. Always add one extra skein from the same dye lot, because large projects are unforgiving if a color doesn't match.
How many stitches do I cast on for a blanket?
Multiply the finished width by your stitches-per-inch gauge. A 40-inch blanket at 4.5 stitches per inch casts on about 180 stitches. Adjust to your stitch-pattern repeat and add border stitches if needed.
Is it better to knit a blanket in one piece or in squares?
One piece avoids seaming but becomes heavy and hard to handle as it grows. Knitting squares or strips keeps each piece portable and lets you check gauge as you go, then seam at the end. Total yarn is similar either way.
Why does my blanket need more yarn than expected?
Garter stitch, seed stitch, cables, and colorwork all use more yarn than stockinette. Edgings and borders add more still. The calculator includes a 10% buffer, but heavily textured blankets may need an extra 15–25%.
