Your result will appear here after you press Calculate.
Estimates assume plain stockinette/garter with a 10% buffer. Ribbing, cables, and lace change yarn use.
Formula used
The calculator works from your gauge and the scarf's area:
- Cast-on stitches = round(width × stitches per inch)
- Total rows = round(length × rows per inch)
- Estimated yarn = width × length × yards-per-square-inch (by yarn weight) × 1.10
- Skeins = ceil(estimated yarn ÷ yards per skein)
Worked examples
Classic 8 × 60 in worsted scarf
At a gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rows per 4 inches, an 8 × 60 inch scarf casts on about 40 stitches, works 420 rows, and uses roughly 265 yards — about 2 skeins of 220-yard yarn.
Chunky 10 × 64 in bulky scarf
In bulky yarn at 12 stitches and 16 rows per 4 inches, a 10 × 64 inch scarf casts on about 30 stitches and uses roughly 247 yards — a fast, cozy make.

Frequently asked questions
How much yarn do I need to knit a scarf?
A standard 8 × 60 inch worsted scarf in plain stitch uses roughly 250–300 yards, or about 2 average skeins. Bulky yarn uses less length; lace and fingering use more. Enter your size, gauge, and yarn weight for a tailored estimate.
How many stitches do I cast on for a scarf?
Multiply the width by your stitches-per-inch gauge. For an 8-inch scarf at 5 stitches per inch, that's about 40 stitches. Adjust to fit your stitch pattern's repeat, then add edge stitches if your pattern needs them.
How many skeins of yarn for a scarf?
Divide the estimated yards by the yards per skein on the ball band and round up. Most worsted scarves need 2 skeins, while bulky scarves often need just 1–2. Buying an extra ball from the same dye lot avoids a mid-project color mismatch.
Does the stitch pattern change how much yarn I need?
Yes. Garter and seed stitch use more yarn than stockinette for the same size, and cables and brioche use noticeably more. The calculator assumes plain stitch with a 10% buffer, so add extra for heavily textured patterns.
How long should a scarf be?
A good rule is to make the scarf about as long as the wearer is tall. For most adults that's 60–72 inches; children's scarves are usually 40–48 inches. Wider 'blanket' scarves can be a little shorter because they wrap with more bulk.
